Beyond the Aquila Rift

On the Love, Death & Robots episode, Beyond the Aquila Rift, we provided 4D facial performance capture and processing services to Unit Image and Blur Studio for the animated short. DI4D supervised the HMC shoot at Audiomotion Studios, where we captured the performances of the lead characters. We provided detailed facial animation for the close-up shots of the main charcater, Greta.

Facial Performance

Based in France, Unit Image, a world leading animation and VFX studio, created the episode titled, Beyond the Aquila Rift. It’s an emotionally charged story focusing on the relationship between the two main characters, Greta and Thom, played by Madeleine Knight and Henry Douthwaite. To achieve a high degree of realism, Unit Image created digitals double of Madelaine and Henry. The piece features several close-up shots of Greta, which have been widely acknowledged as being the most intense emotion expressed by a computer generated character, relied heavily on transferring the emotional performance of Madeleine onto Greta.

Created by Tim Miller and David Fincher, Love, Death and Robots is an 18-part series of animated shorts commissioned by Blur Studio and published by Netflix. DI4D provided 4D facial performance capture and processing services for four episodes of Netflix’s animated series Love, Death and Robots, these episodes were Helping Hand, Aquila Rift, Sonnie’s Edge and Shape Shifters.
